The Bush Lie of the Day: I Have Not Decided to Invade
by Steve
Bush said he had not decided whether to invade Iraq but that it was only a matter of days before a U.N. Security Council vote on a U.S.-backed resolution authorizing force.
Oh pleeze!
I have had enough of this charletan. Let me get some things off my chest here. I support removing Saddam Hussein. I think if Bush had come into office committing himself immediately to closing the deal Clinton started on the Camp David peace talks, and if he had also simultaneously launched an initiative at the UN to push them to act against Saddam based on the evidence he already had at his disposal, the world would be a different place today. Instead, we are left with a situation where the world no longer trusts our president or our Secretary of State. The world fears us more than Saddam. We are instigating the breakup of the United Nations as we know it. We are about to isolate ourselves more in the world than at any time in our history. Countries may fear us, but they will not respect us.
But because George W. Bush hears God tell him to pursue a divine mission in the Arab world, we are about to shock, awe, and kill a lot of innocent people. Militarily, it will probably work out just fine, in the narrow terms of success that Rummy has defined. But we will be looked at differently by the world from this point on, and it will take years if not decades to overcome what is about to happen to the Middle East and how we are viewed in the world.
By the time of the vote at the UN, we will be on the opposite side of Russia. France. Germany, and China. Think about that for a moment. This represents a giant failure on our part to convince them of the soundness of our judgement and motives.
For what reason did the President have a press conference tonight? Can anyone tell me? To prepare us for war? Forget it. We have been prepared for the inevitable for about a month now, and our economy has the sliding numbers to prove it. To convince other countries to vote for our resolution at the UN? Forget it. This administration has lost so much credibility with our alleged evidence and lies that we have to buy our allies and their support. Anything said by George W. Bush at this stage is not going to sway any country unless we are paying for it. To convince us at home? Forget it. He does not care if we support him on this, remember? He is a man of great moral clarity who does not use polls, nor does he care about protesters, remember?
So why waste my time tonight, Mr. Bush? Nothing I say or anyone else in the world will say can change your mind, a mind that contrary to the bald faced lie you told tonight, has been made up for months. There is only one person who could change your mind, and despite the other lies you told tonight about prayer and guidance, you are not listening to him either.
Just do it! Get it over with. Be accountable for your visions, your moral clarity, the deaths you will cause, the trumped up evidence we will see. For the sake of our military forces I hope you and Rummy are dead-on with your military planning. For the sake of our country, I hope the New American Century cabal are right about installing democracy in the Middle East. But the damage done to our economy and our kids’ future hangs on your head solely.
This may be the last thing I write on Iraq until we go in. After tonight, there really is not much more to say since nothing will happen to change any minds. Other blogs already do a better job than me in covering the Iraq run-up.
Instead, I am going to focus on the issues that Bush is intentionally ignoring, his pathetic administration, and his misplaced public interest, as well as the work being done to evict this despicable individual from a house he does not belong in.
