Christmas Is Over - Back To Real Life

by pessimist

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
- Luke 2:8-20

These are the major phrases of the Christian holiday season known as Christmas, the celebration of the birth of the Prince of Peace. We wish each other "Merry Christmas" and "Peace on Earth - Good Will toward All Men".

In doing so, we are blatantly hypocritical. We talk of peace, but our acts of war speak louder than our words.

Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out...and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel...And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man" --with his mouth.
- Mark Twain "What Is Man?"

“Peace on earth will come to stay, when we live Christmas every day.”
- Helen Steiner Rice

We should stop pretending that we are a civilized race. We should acknowledge that we are blood thirsty savages and are addicted to causing death and destruction.

“War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds and dueling—an insult to God and man—a daily crucifixion of Christ.”
- Muriel Lester
