Democrats Grab Kentucky House Seat in Special Election Tonight
In a very significant development tonight, former Kentucky Attorney General Ben Chandler defeated GOP candidate Alice Forgy Kerr in a special election to fill the seat of former GOP Representative Ernie Fletcher, who himself just defeated Chandler in the Kentucky’s governor’s race last fall. The race was widely watched as an indicator of how strong Bush’s coattails would be this fall, especially since both Bush and House Speaker Denny Hastert made appearances on behalf of Kerr by TV or in person, and the GOP establishment dumped money into Kerr’s campaign.
Kerr made the race a referendum on her support of Bush whereas Chandler ran as a fiscal conservative supportive of veterans. Chandler is the first Democrat to win a special election of a formerly GOP-held seat in over a decade. Chandler had the large financial help of the DCCC and several members who pooled $100,000 from their own accounts to beat back Hastert.
Nancy Pelosi is smiling tonight.
