"Your government failed you, and I failed you"

Richard Clarke is being a grown-up in front of the 9/11 Commission, stating the obvious:

"I believe the Bush administration in the first eight months considered terrorism an important issue, but not an urgent issue," Clarke said, an assertion disputed by current members of the administration.

That sounds about right. His real class act, however, was apologizing directly to the families of 9/11:

"Your government failed you, and I failed you," he said. "We tried hard, but that doesn't matter because we failed you. And for that failure, I would ask, once all the facts are out, for your understanding and for your forgiveness."

Thank you, Mr. Clarke, for an act of humility on behalf of an administration which has no shame.
