Contingency Planning For the Day After
by rayman
Right now, I'm sure most of us are fixated on state polls, voter registration fraud, and Pravda-esque television empires. But there's something else that we should keep in mind, and begin to develop a strategy for; namely, the likelihood of a 2000-style recount fiasco propogated by the Rove/Delay machine. I know this sounds overly sensationalistic, but the Repubs have sent none-too-subtle signals in the past few days that, barring a Kerry blowout, they'll do everything in their power to tarnish the legitimacy of a Kerry victory. Observe:
Tom Josefiak, the Bush-Cheney campaign's general counsel, said he worries that the uncertainty caused by potential delays could undermine confidence in the outcome. "If it's a close election in any one state, it may be days or weeks before we know who actually is the winner," he said. "I hope that doesn't happen."
Sure ya don't, Tom. Based on devious comments like this, it's obvious that we have to at least start thinking about this post-election scenario. The Gore recount team in 2000, led first by the hapless Warren Christopher and then by the slightly more able Bill Daley, was outmaneuvered every step of the way by Jim Baker and Rove. Thus, we cannot be outfoxed once again by these jackals. If Kerry is indeed ahead on November 3rd and yet the Repub slime machine starts slinging mud, my recommendation is to take the Republican strategy from 2000 and throw it right back in their face. You know, "Sore-Loserman,""get over it", and such.
Anyway, this scenario isn't something that should preoccupy us right now, as we have a lot more work to do between now and election day. But it's definitely something to keep in mind.
UPDATE: Remember gang, no need to feed the trolls, especially when they're doing such a thoroughly entertaining job whistling past the graveyard.
