Big Brother Is Watching - From The Boardroom

by pessimist

Allusions to George Orwell's prophetic 1984 have become more common that empty Bu$hCo promises. It would be easy to dismiss these commentaries as mere rantings if there wasn't evidence to back up the claims.

We've heard about the Transportation Safety Administration demanding passenger records from the airlines to create a database allegedy intended to catch terrorists flying on Osama's American Express Card, and we know that Wal-Mart has more data storage allocated to customer buying patterns than exists for use by the entire Internet, but did you know that the Republican party is harvesting data about you as well?

OUT AND ABOUT TO GET UGLY

IF YOU DRIVE a Volvo and you do yoga, you are pretty much a Democrat," the Bush-Cheney campaign manager Ken Mehlman—soon to be the head of the Republican National Committee—reportedly told a meeting of Republican governors last week. "If you drive a Lincoln or a BMW and you own a gun, you're voting for George W. Bush."

Mehlman was actually boasting to the governors about his slick new strategies, telling them that the Bush-Cheney campaign studied voters' consumer habits—basically snooping into voters' personal lives—in targeting them.

"We did what Visa did," Mehlman bragged. "We acquired a lot of consumer data. What magazine do you subscribe to? Do you own a gun? How often do the folks go to church? Where do you send your kids to school? Are you married? Based on that, we were able to develop an exact kind of consumer model that corporate America does every day to predict how people vote—not based on where they live but how they live."

And this is a good thing?

How long before such information is used AGAINST people? "You bought a Toyota. Owwer Leedur doesn't own any Toyota stock, so your wrong choice cost him money. We are thus forced by the USA Patriot Investor Act to confiscate your car and direct you to the nearest Ford dealer." Where 'Made in America' is merely a sales slogan.

It could get worse. People were fired from their jobs this year because of their support for John F. Kerry. How long before we encounter Stalinist Soviet-style repression for those who dared to vote against Duh pResident?

I wonder what all those good 'moral values' Christians would say about a program designed to manipulate them being designed and implemented by one of those damned-to-burn-in-Hell sodomites?

Surely Mehlman can't complain now that people are talking about his marital status and how he lives—right? Since he's so confident labeling people based on outward characteristics, Mehlman must understand why his being a 37-year-old "bachelor" who refuses to answer questions about his sexual orientation is a tip-off to many that he's a pathetic closet case, and a pretty vile one at that, having used antigay hatred (aka "moral values") to help elect Bush.

Sauce for the goose.
