Iraqi Security Did Just Fine

by Steve Soto

Want to know why the security worked so well today? First, according to this Knight-Ridder story, our military planned everything about today, right down to collecting the ballots. But who actually provided the security at the polling sites?

The Iraqis, not the Americans.

That’s right, the much maligned (including by me) Iraqi forces. As I said earlier today, the upside today for Bush clearly is an “I told you so” bit of redemption. The downside for Bush and Cheney, especially now when it becomes clear that the Iraqis did just fine handling their own security, is that the Iraqi people and the political leadership may now be more emboldened to tell us “thanks, we’ll take it from here.”

And on a totally unrelated topic, how long do you think it will be before Rove parlays today's success in Iraq into a "he was right about Iraq, he is right about Social Security" meme for Wednesday's State of the Union?

Sound ludicrous? Why, before long, I betcha the Mighty Wurlitzer starts touting Bush as a visionary. Anyone want to take that bet with me?
