GOP Leaders Planned To Politicize Schiavo Case

by Steve

Following up on larreā€™s excellent post below on the outright moral bankruptcy of the GOP in politicizing the Terri Schiavo case when there are other pressing issues facing the country for which the GOP refuses to address, we see this from ABC News tonight. It seems that Bill Frist and the gang have intentionally turned this into a spectacle for political gain:

ABC News obtained talking points circulated among Senate Republicans explaining why they should vote to intervene in the Schiavo case. Among them, that it is an important moral issue and the "pro-life base will be excited," and that it is a "great political issue -- this is a tough issue for Democrats."
My position on this is that we have an unwinnable situation where her parents want her kept alive, while her husband as her guardian wants the tube removed. Being the father of a daughter, I empathize with the Schindlers, her parents. But to see the GOP leadership in both houses step into this while ignoring other issues intentionally reeks of the kind of politics practiced by a fascist cabal in total control.

OK, enough of my daily, gratuitous slap at Bush and the cabal. But I do have a question on this case, a case that I admit I know little about.

Jebbie and the GOP thugs in the Florida legislature have been in total control of the state for many years while the Schiavo case has been working its way towards this terrible climax. Since the matter at hand appears to be the right of a spouse to make these decisions when the parents of the incapacitated spouse disagree with the proposed decision, why haven't Jeb and the state's GOP passed a law at any time in the last five years allowing parents like the Schindlers a clear legal recourse to regain custody over their daughter's care?

Do Jebbie and the GOP care at all about getting the Schindlers their desired solution and the right to life, and if so, why haven't they acted legislatively on the broader issue, instead of dealing with the knee-jerk, emotionally reflexive single issue of trying to get Terri Schiavo's feeding tube reinserted?

Or did Jebbie and the GOP simply want to wait for this day so that he could grandstand it?
