Has Senator Grassley Thrown In The Towel On Privatization?

by Steve

Senate Finance Committee chair Charles Grassley, who said three weeks ago that the president had about three weeks to turn around public opinion on private accounts in order to get congressional support for his privatization plan, told the Associated Press this afternoon in essence that "time's up."

Grassley said that it would be very difficult for him to get a bill to the president this year on Social Security, which is even going farther than saying private accounts are dead. Grassley specifically told the AP that in order to get a bill to the president on Social Security that bipartisan support is needed, and by inference Bush and the White House have failed to line up bipartisan support.
