Welcome to the USSA
Even by Republican standards, John Cornyn's not-so-thinly-veiled attack on the judiciary yesterday went beyond the pale. But we shouldn't look at Cornyn's outburst in isolation. Indeed, now that they've achieved Total Control, Republicans and their conservatista shock troops have set about the task of systematically ferreting out any opposition, whether real or perceived, to their hegemony. The "nuclear option" is the most dramatic example, but it is by no means the only one. Consider:
-The Stalinist purge of universities in the guise of an "Academic Bill of Rights," which Paul Krugman discusses today.
-The long-expected crackdown on labor-unions, both here and in Iraq.
-The K-Street Project. 'Nuff said.
-The Lysenkoist campaign against the scientific community, which Chris Mooney dubs the "science wars."
What all these campaigns have in common is a mistrust-verging-on-paranoia of any sector in society (no matter how seemingly innocuous) that doesn't toe the Party Line. The only element missing so far are show trials of these bourgeois counter-revolutionaries. Just like their Soviet predecessors, Republicans and their movement conservative allies are destined to fail in their quest for one-party domination. The only question is how much misery they'll inflict on the rest of the country in the process.
