The Clowns We Sent In

by pessimist
Isn't we rich? Are we too fair? You here at last on the ground, Me high in air. Sent in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing up laws,
One who won't move.
Where are the clowns?
Sent in the clowns.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear.
I thought that you'd vote what I want.
"Sorry, my dear."
But where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns.
Don't bother, they're here.

(My deepest apologies to Stephen Sondheim)

It's been a bad week for America with the votes to make permanent the estate tax cuts and to pass the wage-slave bankruptcy law. Even the stock markets aren't doing too well thanks to those who choose not to know cause and effect.

But we shouldn't be surprised by this week's outrages - we should have expected them.

How many of our representatives actually read any of the USA Patriot Act before they voted on it? Few. And yet as they like to say in court, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse!"

Ignorance is the norm in our America today. The American voters don't know (or seem to care) just who is leading them (and where). Our legislators will vote on bills without even reading them because of the horse-trading scam that is our Congress, and Owwer Leedur signs bills without knowing how they're going to affect his Red State base!

The requirement to have passports or other approved documents was included in Congress' massive Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, which Bush signed in December. Bush ordered a review of the newly passed requirement relieved frequent border-crossers such as Farley and local businesses, who say they'd be devastated by a lack of binational traffic. Bush said Thursday that he thought of Texas, where he was once governor, when he heard about the passport requirement

He didn't know what he was signing. He didn't know that it was going to affect Texas (as if there is any other place in America?). NOW he wants the law changed!

It doesn't matter at this point if you are Blue State progressive or a Red State regressive, this band is your band, this band is my band, from California to the New York Island, from the Northwest forests, to Miami's waters, this band of clowns is from you and me.

We did this to ourselves by not knowing who we were voting for and what they really represent. We are to blame for the pending demise of our Republic.

Just remember this when someone asks you why someone didn't do something or warn them. They should have known for themselves.
