Guess Who Formed A Military Alliance Today?

by Steve

While we were justifiably distracted by the horror in London today, and as the Mighty Wurlitzer somehow uses today’s tragic events as a justification for an invasion of Iran, we find that our ability to do anything to Iran has all but evaporated today without apparently any advance warning to the Bush Administration. Why?

Because now that we have “liberated” the Iraqis from Saddam Hussein, they decided today to use that freedom and respect the loss of our soldiers’ lives in fighting for it by announcing a military cooperation pact with…..Iran. That’s right, I’m sure this one was right out of the PNAC playbook under Chapter 47, “Fuck Up Bad Enough So That Iraq Gets Closer to Iran.”

Defense Minister Saadoun al-Dulaimi signed a pact in Tehran agreeing to accept Iranian military training and other cooperation with the country Iraq fought for a decade under ousted leader Saddam Hussein.
Responding to the suggestion that the thaw in ties with Iran would anger Washington, Dulaimi said: "Nobody can dictate to Iraq its relations with other countries."

See, Bush is successful. He managed to get the exact opposite of what he wanted, and now the Sunnis will be so happy with this arrangement, as will I’m sure be the Israelis.

So, if the Iraqis now want the Iranians to handle their training for them and provide other military assistance, then what exactly are we doing there?
