Rummy's Second Epiphany - "They're Not Insurgents"

by Steve

Rummy took the opportunity at his press briefing today to replay the “they’re not guerrillas” assertion from several years ago, when he told the media that our opponents in Iraq are not “insurgents” either. And why are they not insurgents, oh Detached One?

"I think that you can have a legitimate insurgency in a country that has popular support and has a cohesiveness and has a legitimate gripe. These people don't have a legitimate gripe," Rumsfeld said.
"They've got a peaceful way to change that government -- through the constitution, through the elections. These people aren't trying to promote something other than disorder and to take over that country and turn it into a caliphate and then spread it around the world."

No legitimate gripe with Shia death squads?

No legitimate gripe with what we did in Fallujah?

No legitimate gripe with what we did to their women and children at Abu Ghraib?

And, oh by the way Rummy, they're in Iraq because of you, and your failure to seal the borders, your failure to secure the weapons stockpiles, your disbanding of the army and Baath infrastructure, your failure to provide enough troops for the job, your ongoing acceptance of torture, and because of your assinine belief that toppling Saddam wouldn't lead the country to the verge of a civil war. If you were a real Defense Secretary, you would know that.

But then I guess a man who spends more time as a schoolmarm than he does in seeing that the insurgents’ gripes are more with us than the Iraqis themselves wouldn’t get it anyway.

Why can't this asshole ever have an epiphany about something of moral importance, like his acceptance of torture, or the men and women he sent to their deaths due to his own incompetence?
