Allawi No More Popular Now Than Before

by Steve

Looks like the Bush Administration's second most-favorite Iraqi politician, whom they were hoping would emerge as a compromise candidate for a top spot in the post-December 15th government, isn't getting any better of a reception now than when he ran at the head of a slate last January. Ayad Allawi claims he survived an assassination attempt in Najaf, yet he traveled with private security (I wonder who paid for them?) and didn't ask for Iraqi police protection. Was it an assassination attempt, or just a face-saving way for Allawi to spin the fact that he was run out of town?
