Another Condi "Who Coulda Predicted" Episode

by Steve

"I've asked why nobody saw it coming. It does say something about us not having a good enough pulse."
--Condi Rice, commenting on how Hamas’ victory caught the administration by surprise

"Steve, I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile."
--Condi Rice, May 16, 2002

See a pattern here?

"There is a lot of blame to go around. But on the American side, the conceptual failure that contributed to disaster was the president's belief that democracy and elections solve everything. You've got to hedge against the risk that elections are going to lead to precisely this result. The hedge is to build civil society and democratic institutions first. But this administration doesn't listen to that."
--Martin Indyk, a top Middle East negotiator in the Clinton administration

The administration gets caught flat footed once again, this time with its blinders on about the Palestinians, because they clearly thought that after spending hundreds of millions of dollars propping up Fatah and denigrating them at the same time for years, it wouldn’t lead to a protest vote by the Palestinians for Hamas.

But at least Condi knows when to buy new shoes, right?

Worst. Foreign Policy Team. Ever
