Cheney Owns Up To It
"I'm the guy who pulled the trigger that fired the round that hit Harry. You can talk about all of the other conditions that exist at the time but that's the bottom line and — it was not Harry's fault....You can't blame anybody else. I'm the guy who pulled the trigger and shot my friend."
--Dick Cheney to Fox News today
Cheney owned up to shooting Whittington today, and laid to rest any further attempts to blame the other guy. Good for him. Should they have done this days ago. Yup. Why didn't they?
Look, they screwed this up, plain and simple. As smart as we sometimes think these guys are, forget it. The presumption of secrecy, imperial power, and creating your own reality is so ingrained with these guys that they make stupid, preventable mistakes and then wonder why stuff they would have got away with back in 2002 and 2003 doesn't fly now. The media gets pissed off every now and then, when it is taking a break from being on its knees to this crew, and shows a little spine. It's just too bad they don't show that same spine on something that matters.
But rest assured, with Cheney now displaying the contrition he should have displayed back on Sunday morning but couldn't for any number of questionable reasons, the media will revert to its supplicant role once again. As far as the public is concerned, they had already made their minds up on Cheney months ago, and this wasn't going to change anything of consequence. Besides, Cheney isn't on a ballot again, and will simply run out the string on his pathetic public life until he gets dragged into Scooter's trial.
So we can now treat ourselves to a resumption of Tweety and Timmy's ass-kissing of these guys, and it will truly be a "nothing to see here; move on" climate once again.
