State Department Knew About Hamas' Strength Before Election

by Steve

"I don't know anyone who wasn't caught off guard by its very strong showing"
--Condi Rice, January 29th

Here’s another entry from the "Condi is a Liar" file.

A poll conducted for the State Department days before January's Palestinian elections warned policymakers that the militant Islamic group Hamas was in a position to win.
Nevertheless, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said after the election that her department had no advance indication of a major Hamas triumph.
The poll found that Hamas had been gaining support in previous months and was running neck-and-neck with the secular Fatah party -- 30 percent vs. 32 percent -- among likely voters. It was distributed within the State Department on Jan. 19, six days before the elections.

Did I mention that Rice runs the State Department? Apparently, reading comprehension is a big problem for Rice, who has already shown us that she either didn’t understand the printed words on the August 6, 2001 PDB and the caveats in the pre-war Iraq WMD intelligence, or didn’t take the time to do her staff work.

And for those of you who are concerned about a racial bias against Condi around here, since when did incompetence and mendacity have a racial filter? The woman is a walking clothes horse, whom Bush parades around as a sign of his committment to equal opportunity, when in fact she has less clout overseas than any recent Secretary of State in the last several decades, as evidenced by the rejection she got from all she visited in her recent trip to the Middle East. Hell, Condi is so sad as a Secretary of State that Warren Christopher shines in comparison.

But she does dress nice, and that is all that matters to this White House now.
