Murtha Would Challenge Hoyer For Majority Leader

by Steve

If the Democrats retake the House this fall, John Murtha has just announced that he will run for Majority Leader, challenging if necessary Steny Hoyer. Don't forget that overall Murtha is a conservative Democrat, but having him at the top of the caucus gives the Democrats a huge and credible voice on both Iraq and military affairs.

Apparently, the announcement caught Hoyer by surprise, as he had already been lining support to go after the Majority Leader slot should the Democrats retake the House, and had already told Nancy Pelosi that he would not challenge her for Speaker. Reportedly, Pelosi and Murtha have become allies of late, so this announcement is likely to cause some internal debate inside the caucus.
