Detainee Treatment Will Generate A Democratic Inquiry Next Year

by Steve

Many of you are demoralized and rightly so at the recent cave-in by John McCain and other GOP senators on the detainee treatment bill. McCain will have to explain during the 2008 campaign how he could support a bill that allows for the abolishment of habeas corpus, and that grants the president power to arrest US citizens at his whim, and torture in violation of our constitution and the Geneva Convention protocols. This will especially get dicey for McCain and the rest of the GOP senators if the Democrats retake the House or Senate, because it seems clear that Senator Carl Levin and his counterparts amongst the House Democrats will take this information and drag Alberto Gonzales and the Pentagon leadership in front of a congressional inquiry sometime next year.
