Open Thread

One of the most common suggestions about what to do to resolve the Iraq problem is to define a federated government with autonomous regions that have separate regional governments. As the situation in Iraq unwinds, the Southern Shiites are rejecting this solution because for them, it appears a federated Iraq creates the equivalent of a Colombia nightmare where the autonomous states are run as a corrupt fiefdom with armed militias fighting it out for control. Funny how all the ideals and examples of the west are turning to dust under the enactment of Bush's vision of bringing democracy to the Middle East. Indeed, the idea of bringing democracy with a gun is so quaint.

Here's an open thread for you.
