Pelosi Fulfills Campaign Promise On Intelligence Oversight
by Steve
Nancy Pelosi yesterday deftly dealt with intelligence oversight by proposing a new select committee to review intelligence expenditures, addressing one of the key recommendations of the 9/11 Commission and meeting one of the Democrats’ campaign promises in the 2006 elections. The GOP was left to mumble about how this move doesn’t go far enough, when in fact it was the same GOP that refused to implement this recommendation for the last two years. Pelosi herself was repeatedly ignored by the White House on this issue when the GOP had total control.
As the Los Angeles Times noted, one 9/11 Commission member, former GOP senator Slade Gorton said this was a “significant step forward.” The Wall Street Journal noted that this move fulfilled the commission’s recommendation, and said that Democrats were going to be aggressive in fixing these gaps in oversight in a go-forward basis.
Good job Nancy.
