Just Who Were The "Insurgents" Yesterday?
In an update to my earlier post about yesterday's attack by Iraqi security forces upon "insurgents", commenters Chongo and Ken rightly pointed out that Juan Cole among others have called into question the account that is being peddled by the New York Times and the Washington Post. I myself noted that both stories couldn't even agree on who it was the Iraqi forces were attacking, and whether or not these "insurgents" were Sunni or Shia. But as Professor Cole notes, it appears that the largely Shiite Iraqi security forces attacked and killed dozens of fellow Shiites from a rival sect, all with the help of American air power. And they attacked a sect that, although possibly whacko, is strongly against Iran gaining influence in the country.
