Chalabi Works Against Political Reconciliation

by Steve

The White House demands that everyone give the surge a chance to work, even while they privately beg for GOP support until August. For the surge to work, General Petraeus of all people says there needs to be political reconciliation, as he and even Henry Kissinger now say that we cannot win in Iraq militarily. The White House has told Congress that the surge is conditioned on the Iraqis meeting certain benchmarks.

Two of those benchmarks are the passage of the nation’s Oil Law, and allowing the Baathists back into the political process and the country’s bureaucracy. So why is Dick Cheney’s man in Baghdad Ahmad Chalabi working with Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani to ensure that the political reconciliation never occurs?
