Amidst The Dead Students, Reassure The NRA

In the aftermath of the horror from Virginia Tech this morning, leave it to this White House to send the wrong message right away: he’s horrified about the killings but we must all keep our guns.

A White House spokesman said President Bush was horrified by the rampage and offered his prayers to the victims and the people of Virginia.
“The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed,” spokeswoman Dana Perino said.

What kind of ghouls even give a damn right now about messaging the NRA line while dead sons and daughters are being removed from a university? I’m sure the parents of the dead students appreciate the president’s priorities.

Update: Dizzy at DKos provides the transcript of the White House press conference today where Dana Perino gave the stock answer. To be fair to Perino, she responded in the context of a reporter giving her a chance to say whether or not the president was going to do anything on this issue other than his lame conference on this several years ago. And of course, she had nothing to say except 'you have a right to have your guns and the existing laws should be followed.' It would have been better as several of you suggested if she had simply said "this isn't the place to have a debate about gun laws", but instead we got the reaffirmation that maintaining access to guns is still the policy. I'm sure the ignored laws are cold comfort to the parents today.
