Turkey Goes Into Iraq

by Steve

Days after the United States asked Turkey to show restraint against Kurdish guerillas operating in northern Iraq, the AP reports at this hour that Turkey has now sent several thousand troops into northern Iraq. This comes on the same day that a Sunni insurgent group has reached a cease-fire with Al Qaeda in Iraq, undermining months of efforts by the United States to drive a wedge between the two groups so that Al Qaeda would be isolated. Now the two groups likely will unite against the American occupation. And this also comes as the Los Angeles Times reports that the al-Maliki government is on the verge of collapse.

I'm sure the GOP argument will now be that we need even more troops in a "second surge" this fall.
