Propaganda is Working and Other News

by soccerdad

It would appear that I have underestimated the stupidity of the American sheeple.

A new Newsweek poll out this weekend exposed "gaps" in America's knowledge of history and current events.

Perhaps most alarmingly, 41% of Americans answered 'Yes' to the question "Do you think Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq was directly involved in planning, financing, or carrying out the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001?"

That total is actually up 5 points since September 2004.

Further, a majority of people couldn't identify Saudia Arabia as the country of origin of most of the 9/11 hijackers, even given the question in multiple choice format. 20% answered Iraq, while 14% believed the hijackers came from Iran.

At this point what can you say. It looks like we have the government we deserve.

DEBKA, which is known for its inaccuracies, is reporting that the USS Enterprise carrier group is headed to the Persian Gulf, which would make 3 carrier groups in the region. They also report that the US is considering sending a 4th group.
The Navy's web site does not list the Enterprise as deployed, It did say on June 8, that the crew was on predeployment leave. So this DEBKA report may be propaganda by the Israelis. Not that they would ever do something like that.

Meanwhile our Congress last week approved an amendment that will allow funding of long term bases in Irag. As if that wasn't good enough the House voted 400-2 to approve a resolution charging Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with violating the 1948 Convention on Genocide and the United Nations Charter because of his alleged calls for the destruction of Israel. Its all based on a speech mistranslated by MEMRI. And buried in the resolution is this tidbit

Whereas Iran has aggressively pursued a clandestine effort to arm itself with nuclear weapons....

And as Arthur Silber points out

And that, as they say, is the ball game. In this manner, the Democratic House concedes, sanctifies, and gives its nearly unanimous support to the major propaganda point of the Bush-Cheney-Israel drive to war with Iran.
