Edwards Walks It Back
by John Patric
A couple of debates ago a black preacher asked John Edwards how he could use his religious beliefs to justify lack of equality for gays in marriage laws -- since that was how bigots justified segregation way back when.
At tonight's gay-centricThe Visible Debate 08: A Presidential Forum, Edwards took responsibility for his mistake.
"Joe: what is it within your religion that prevents him from accepting marriage equality?
Edwards: I shouldn't have said that. It makes perfect sense for me for gay couples to ask for full equality. It is a mistake to impose a personal religious belief on the American people. He says it is part of my heart and soul to do the right thing."
Pam Spaulding covered it at Americablog.
