Jose Padilla Found Guilty

by Mary

With less than two days of deliberation, the jury has returned a guilty verdict on all counts. What that means for the state of justice is something we will have to discuss in the future. What does it mean to have convicted someone who has been so dehumanized that there isn't much of a human personality left? Somehow in my civics classes I thought that this type of trial was something that Stalin did when he wanted to make a splash. It wasn't something that Americans did.

Update: Digby explains the reason the way this case was conducted is simply un-American. If this judgment is allowed to stand, then the Bush administration would have rendered as void the rights described in Amendments 4, 6 and 8 by simple fiat.

Update2: Here's what the government did to an American citizen before they even charged him with a crime. This is the type of government that George Bush rules.
