Enabling The Fascism
Why is Democratic senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska more worried about avoiding a filibuster against right wing judicial nominee Leslie Southwick than he is about forcing the GOP to stop filibustering the Iraq war debate? Then again, if Michael Mukasey has now proven himself to be Bush’s latest enabler of torture and the imperial presidency, how many Democrats do you feel will do the right thing and vote against his confirmation? Probably very few.
When a nominee is so transparently unqualified for the Cabinet, they should be filibustered. But many Democrats voted for Alberto Gonzales under the false premise that the president deserves to have the lackeys he (or she) wants. We've already seen the effect of having such lackeys so grossly politicize the Justice Department that former GOP AGs say enough is enough. So because Mukasey is a step above Gonzales, you will see many Democrats vote to confirm him, even though he indicated that he and Bush will continue torturing, shredding the Constitution, and rendering the Congress irrelevant for the remainder of Bush’s term.
Similarly, red-state Democrats like the Nelson boys can’t seem to work themselves into a froth over the GOP’s efforts to avoid debating the war and its costs, yet these same Democrats condone the war without end and instead work to avoid inaction when it comes to confirming for life a racist judge on the federal bench. And thanks to Dianne Feinstein, Southwick will probably be confirmed and set to poison the federal bench for decades, which is about as long as we will be in Iraq if folks like Ben Nelson had their way.
Bush has succeeded in scaring Congress away from debating Iraq because of lops like Ben Nelson, who are more worried about getting along in Congress than they are with debating our national interests.
Update: Thanks to 12 Democrats plus Joe Lieberman, a filibuster against Southwick was defeated this morning, and shortly thereafter Leslie Southwick, with a questionable record at best towards gays and African Americans, was confirmed for the 5th circuit by a vote of 59-38. I guess there are no blacks or gays in California, Hawaii, Arkansas, the Dakotas, West Virginia, and Connecticut.
Update #2: Here are the fine Democrats and their pal Lieberman who voted to give Leslie Southwick a lifetime appointment to the federal appeals court.
If you are a progressive living in any one of those states, you might want to ask your Democratic senator why they let a president with a 24% approval rating place someone like Southwick on the bench for life.
Maybe they all adopted the Lieberman justification: it was only two out of thousands of opinions, and besides, he didn't write the opinions, he only agreed with them.
