Democrats Look The Other Way

by Steve Soto

There are three noncampaign stories that I think deserve some attention today, because of how they summarize the administration's spell over this country, the media, and the Democratic Party.

First, without the media noticing in all of the propaganda from General David Petraeus, 18 US military personnel have died in Iraq just since Sunday, in the deadliest stretch in months. But did anyone notice?

Second, while the media buys whatever Petraeus is selling, why has no one noticed that twice as many Iraqis are being killed each day now compared to January? Did the Democrats notice and make an issue of this? Nope.

Lastly, according to ABC News, an administration insider now confirms that the highest levels of the Bush administration met to review and approved the torture methods used against individual detainees on a case-by-case basis. It appears that the CIA forced these meetings to gain cover from senior officials for the illegal activities they were taking. As such, Dick Cheney, Condi Rice, and Donald Rumsfeld all committed illegal acts according to our own laws and worse yet, all committed war crimes. I wonder how John McCain will rationalize picking a war criminal if and when he names Condi as his running mate? And where are Pat Leahy and Arlen Specter in investigating these war crimes by top officials of the United States government? Why is the ACLU seemingly alone in calling for a Special Counsel to investigate clear war crimes by this government?
