Leahy's Doormats
by Steve Soto
I’m constantly amazed at how Senate Democrats can be so gullible and spineless. Stephen Bradbury, who is principal assistant deputy attorney general of the Justice Department, has been nominated by Bush twice to be head of the Office of Legal Counsel, a position that requires Senate confirmation. The Senate has sent his nomination back to the White House without approval twice since Bush’s 2005 nomination of Bradbury, who is being opposed by Democrats for a number of reasons, chiefly because of his stained hands in the administration’s interrogation tactics.
The GOP ran the Senate both times when Bradbury failed to get Senate confirmation for the OLC job.
Democrats claim rightly that by keeping Bradbury in the OLC job as an acting chief beyond the statutory 210 day limit for such appointments, the Bush Administration is flouting a 1998 law, passed by a GOP senate to prevent the Clinton Administration from doing the same thing. But Bradbury has now been in this job for several years, and yet the most that Pat Leahy can say is that Democrats may not cooperate with the DOJ.
Are you kidding me, Doormat Pat? If you allowed this to go on for several years now, especially since you have run the Senate Judiciary Committee yourself for well over a year, do you really think the Bush Administration is worried about a lack of Democratic cooperation?
At any time over the last several years, did you or your trusty fellow doormat Dianne Feinstein ever hold up the DOJ budget over this matter? Did you hold up the Mukasey nomination over this matter?
Nope. And now you think anyone in the White House is worried about you? Do you think that Trent Lott or Mitch McConnell would hesitate for a moment to do likewise to a Democratic administration?
Please, oh please find me better Democrats who aren’t afraid of their own shadows.
