One In Eight

by Turkana

New Scientist:

Climate change – and even some attempts to tackle it – are pushing one in eight species of bird towards extinction, according to the latest assessment of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

At a meeting in Bonn, Germany, this week the organisation released an update of its Red List of endangered birds, which names 1226 species as threatened. Of these, 26 have become more threatened since last year. The conservation status of just two of the species has improved....

"Species are being hit by the double whammy of habitat loss and climate change," says Stuart Butchart, of BirdLife International. "As populations become fragmented the effect of climate change can have an even greater impact, leading to an increased risk of local extinctions."
