Immunity Over Security

by Steve Soto

The GOP and Bush Administration are perfectly willing to let our intelligence capabilities degrade somewhat if they don't get retroactive immunity for the telecoms. Congressional Democrats need to understand that Bush and McCain will demagogue this issue in August just before the GOP convention, and blame Democrats for making us unsafer from terrorists simply for not letting the telecoms off the hook for breaking the law. It makes no difference that this is the only remaining impediment to a bipartisan surveillance reform deal that keeps FISA intact. All the GOP cares about is misdirecting blame to the Democrats, instead of having voters realize that the GOP places the interests of Telecoms ahead of the country and our intelligence community.
