WaPo/ABC News Poll: Obama Up By 8

by Steve Soto

There are some interesting findings in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll out today:

Obama leads McCain nationally by eight points, 50%-42%.

Flip-flopping is not seen as a liability by voters, with 78% saying it’s more important to adjust your thinking to new facts than it is to be rigid and wrong.

Bush’s approval rating in this poll hits a new low of 28%.

Obama leads by nine among independents, and now has a 15-point lead over McCain among women voters.

Obama has a 19-point edge over McCain on who voters would trust more to handle the economy.

McCain's strategy of focusing on national security and away from the economy is perfectly understandable, given his defects and a need to run on his perceived strengths. Since the economy will be in the toilet by Election Day, it will all come down to whether or not the GOP can scare enough voters away from Obama to make them forget the last eight years of Bush/Cheney negligence on the economy.

Update: The latest CBS News/NYT poll shows a 6-point lead for Obama among registered voters, but a large racial divide:

More than 80 percent of black voters said they had a favorable opinion of Mr. Obama; about 30 percent of white voters said they had a favorable opinion of him.

Only 30 percent of white voters have a favorable opinion of him? And yet the same media elites think the New Yorker cover is no big deal.
