So It's Luck?

by Steve Soto

I suspect that it was difficult for David Broder to write a column today in which he admitted that Obama is having a good trip and finds himself better positioned on foreign policy than McCain. Of course, Broder seemingly chalks this up to luck and timing, rather than being correct on the issues, as evidenced by his slap at Obama for being unable to admit that the surge worked, when in fact there are numerous reasons why Iraq is perceived as being safer now than in early 2007.

Broder's sympathies and preference for McCain are obvious, as one would expect of one dinosaur towards another. I just wonder how long it will be into a possible Obama presidency before the Beltway Elites start treating Obama as another inferior outsider who is walking on their grass. Obama's ties to Tom Daschle and K Street should mitigate against that, and Beltway snobs like Broder have a double standard on this, because they never treat self-professed Republican outsiders like this (see: Bush, George W.). But if Broder is chalking up most of the success of Obama's trip to luck and timing, and not being right on the issues, then we'll see when the Dean of the Beltway turns on him.
