12,000 More Troops Heading For Afghanistan

by Jeff Dinelli

Whoever wins the White House in November will inherit an increasingly volatile situation in Afghanistan. The commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, has requested that 12,000 to 15,000 additional U.S. troops bolster the approximately 34,000 already there by the end of this year, with near-certain increases slated for 2009.

The last few months in Afghanistan have been deadly, with Taliban warlords, funded, trained and armed by the CIA in the 1980's, growing more confident. Afghan civilians are extremely angry, the border with Pakistan is a sieve, resulting in more and more car bombs being planted by tribes, and.....forgive me, but what are we doing there again?

Al Qaeda has never been stronger nor more deadly. What do we really know about them or the other terrorist groups, and is military force the correct way to be going about this?

Doesn't matter, since both McCain and Obama vow to increase military actions in Afghanistan.
