False Security Behind Walls

by Deacon Blues

We've been conditioned to believe that the Surge has made everything much better in Iraq. And to a degree, things are so much better in Anbar province that CENTCOM has been quietly redeploying troops from there to Afghanistan for several months now, even though the Bush Administration has still failed to send enough troops to turn back the Taliban. Yet as we know, things were changing in Anbar before the Surge began.

But how good are things really in Baghdad? And why are they better? McClatchy's local correspondents give us their perspective, which indicates that things aren't really secure in Baghdad, as evidenced by the need for continuous security patrols in a city that has become significantly walled off and partitioned.

So is this Bush's "victory"?
