Obama Makes Two Great Moves On Energy And The Environment
by Steve
According to several media accounts, President Obama will hit two home runs on Monday, when he directs the Environmental Protection Agency to make it easier for California to implement more stringent emission standards than those contained in federal law. The Bush Administration had eviscerated California's attempt to obtain a waiver to pursue its own tougher emission standards, even though more than a dozen states wanted to follow California's lead.
In the second move, Obama will also direct the Transportation Department to mandate that the nation's auto fleet reach an average fuel efficiency of 35 miles per gallon by no later than 2020.
Both of these moves are essential building blocks in energy independence and slowing global warming.
