Several Well Deserved Wins
by Deacon Blues
I'm very glad that Sean Penn and Kate Winslett won tonight. Despite the Hollywood chatter about Mickey Rourke's chances with "The Wrestler", Penn earned this award, like he earns all his awards, for his excellent work on the screen. It was also a class move on his part to give special acknowledgement to Rourke's resurrection. As for Winslett, she had two great performances in 2008 and deserved an award for at least one of them, no matter how good Meryl Streep was, once again.
As for "Slumdog Millionaire", I liked the movie a lot, but it seemed that Hollywood was intent on sending a shout out overseas this year. Bollywood makes damn good movies, and "Slumdog" is at the top of that list, but the film as a Best Picture winner will not be remembered years from now. Then again, 2008 wasn't a great year for Hollywood movies either, as a lot of the notable movies came from indie houses or from overseas, while Hollywood opted for big-budget comic book projects or grossly-overated comedies.
Aside from the Penn and Winslett acceptance speeches, I thought the best part was the segment with Steve Martin and Tina Fey.
Your thoughts are welcome.
