One place where the Obama administration has a chance to get it right is in the area of healthcare. This area has been another where I've grown increasingly worried that we'd get a mishmash of faux reform that does nothing to get to the root of the problem. But when I heard that Obama has been reading Dr. Atul Gawande's brilliant dissection of what ails our healthcare industry and actually quotes from it, I start to think that this might be one policy area where the line in the sand will be drawn on the side of the American public and not on the side of the system that has condemned so many to despair and bankruptcy. There is a cure for what ails us, and Gawande's piece is now required reading in the White House. It would be hard to believe that Obama would settle for less now when he understands that failure in this area is truly not an option.
