Dysfunctional Politics

by Mary

Jared Bernstein has been blogging about US economic politics ever since he left the White House as an economic advisor for Vice President Joe Biden a few months ago. Leaving the White House and spending time watching the sausage being made has changed his impression about how functional our politics are today.

But man, I knew our politics was in rough shape, but I don’t think I realized just how dysfunctional they really were until the last few weeks. That would be bad enough if we were in a full employment economy…at 9.2% unemployment, it’s really kind of tragic.

I suspect that he thought he had a good finger on the pulse of the political situation while he was in the White House, but after he left and has had to watch the actual day-to-day politics surrounding the debt ceiling he has become seriously more concerned about the ability of this country to address our real problems. People who don't have time to pay attention to the day-to-day political maneuvers just don't realize how crazy politics have become. I suspect that this is why when the White House reads Paul Krugman talking about "the crazy", they think he is is shrill rather than that they are truly unaware about how bad things really are.
