Comments: Gore Faces The Usual GOP Drivel

Steve,

AIPAC's Queen will undoubtedly be on her very best behavior not wanting to appear threatened or petty.

I thought Gore was great in An Inconvenient Truth, but seeing him this morning reminded me of just how boring he can be when he sets his mind to it. He'd drone on for 5 minutes and then say "let me be brief." I'm convinced he should not run for president--he can do much more good sticking to this issue. He wouldn't get elected because, as smart as he is, and as right as he is, no one can stand to listen to him for more than 30 seconds. At one point he thanked the committee for giving him more than the usual time for an opening statement. The camera went to someone on the committee (not sure who) who looked bored to death with his head leaning on his hand.

The existence of manmade global warming is incontestible; we must change or forever destroy the planet's climate, it's that simple.

Diversifying our energy sources and upgrading our energy consuming devices will very likely be a net gain for our economy, jobs-wise.

And of course unchecked global warming will be an utter catastrophe to the complicated integrated system capitalists call "our economy". Envision your "economy" and its GDP with seas overwhelming high population density coastlines everywhere, worldwide humanitarian crises, ferociously destructive weather events every time you turn around, and completely new and unknown precipitation patterns all over the globe, you order-loving capitalists.

But let's say defeating global warming would have some "economy constricting" effects for some time. Repubs are saying we're not going to do what's necessary to save the miraculous 12,000 year old stable climate upon which every species on Earth and every future generation depends because it might involve some economic "sacrifice" for America?

There's Repub leadership and fortitude for you! What kind of a warped, decayed vision of this country, its people and its values do these "conservative" turds have, anyway?

Has anybody ever won a Nobel and an Oscar? You gotta figure that looks pretty sweet on your mantle.

Posted by dj moonbat at March 21, 2007 12:58 PM

Go Barbara Boxer! She let Inhofe have it for not letting Gore answer his questions. OK, granted, Gore was seemingly going off on his own tangent and didn't look like he really intended to answer the questions.... Still, after Inhofe suggested sort of rule, Boxer told Inhofe that he didn't make the rules anymore, "you used to, when you had this", holding up the gavel, "but you don't anymore." The crowd laughed and cheered. "Elections have consequences" she said.

imagine if you will,
that either hillary or obama were actually the candidate? I am not sure that we would get any change at all.
it's al or nothing.

Posted by oldtree at March 21, 2007 01:05 PM

He's not gonna run.

Deal with it.

Has anybody ever won a Nobel and an Oscar?

I don't think so. If Davis Guggenheim were nominated for the Nobel he could be the first dj.

;)

The MSNBC article brought to mind a thoughtful commentary at RealClimate last summer on the popular dialog about climate change, The missing repertoire by Gavin Schmidt, a world class climate scientist.

Also, an RC article about the rhetorical devices used by the other person to testify today, Bjorn Lomborg.

A Nobel?

It does sound sweet, but it ain't gonna happen.

I'm waiting for September. It'll be obvious then if Gore is running. The way things stand now, Gore isn't. Until he is, then it doesn't matter.

CG, I disagree with you - I'm not even a science person, but I couldn't stop watching Gore - forget about the environment, just listening to the man and pretending he is the President ... well, talk about a high!
This guy makes coal generators and ozone levels sound sexy.

Lol, ggb. He had his moments, but he also had his really boring moments!

Posted by CG at March 21, 2007 04:02 PM

CG - I nearly fainted when he put his hand on his chest on stage at the Oscars and said "My fellow Americans" - cripes, and I am a Canadian!!! and I haven't watched the complete Oscar show in more than 30 years (okay, maybe I need to get a life, ha, ha) but you have to admit, with what is out there, Gore looks pretty damn good (maybe I should start an Al Gore Fan Club - just joking!)
On the other hand, Bush couldn't - ahhh, forget, we know Bush can't.

Posted by ggb at March 21, 2007 04:34 PM

ggb, I'm with you about Gore. Deep intelligence and a lifelong commitment to nothing less than the saving of the planet - Yummy! I'd support him for prez in a heartbeat. I would love it more if Richard Clarke were back in counterterrorism, too. Face it, it'd be nice to have an adult in the White House!

", but seeing him this morning reminded me of just how boring he can be when he sets his mind to it. He'd drone on for 5 minutes and then say "let me be brief."

This incredible sentence seems to forget the country has just been subjected to the worst idiot liar president we have ever seen who cannot speak intelligible English.

Jesus, the incredible arrogance--Al talks too much but hey, we just had the moron of the century for a president, how could that be any better?

How dare you waltz in here and denigrate a man who won Election 2000 and will soon win a Nobel to go along with his Oscar.

Who the fuck are you? What shining accomplishments of intellect do you posses to be so sure of condemnation? My god.....I swear....

Posted by paradox at March 21, 2007 05:44 PM

Grrrrr arrgghhh frikkinfrakken ressofresso rrrrr

Geez, paradox, don't have an aneurysm. A lot of nice people think Gore's delivery is sonorous and sleep-inducing. It's his schtick! No need to bite CG's head off for sayin' so.

I'm curious what idio means when he says the Nobel won't happen. I don't know much about the process and am wondering why he thinks so.

Posted by iamcoyote at March 21, 2007 06:03 PM

All right, coyote, I won't wear the label of being unhinged, thank you so much.

He's not boring to me, he's erudite. If you can't pay attention for long or don't like details then he's not your cup of tea. But those traits make for a very, very good public executive.

Al Gore should be President this second with 9/11 and all the horror never happening. He's not because y'all happily chuck Fox News propaganda points around. Good for you!

Boring--win Election 2000, a Nobel and an Oscar. Just what part of that is boring?

Al Gore represents the good of our country, stolen from us in this utter disaster. Please excuse the fuck outta me for being passionate about it, it's just my country and future.

Go in peace, whatever your name is. Al Gore has earned the utmost respect. You talk like that and that's the response you'll get, I have no problem at all with it. Yeah.

Posted by paradox at March 21, 2007 06:13 PM

And for those who think that having the Dems in charge of Congress is meaningless because of the Iraq splintering, just remember that these hearings on the reality of global warming would never, ever, ever have happened without the huge victory in November, nor would any proposed global warming legislation ever have seen the light of day.

It'd be locked up forever in the horrendous, vile Sen. Inhofe's (R-Ok) dungeon.

Posted by euzoius at March 21, 2007 06:22 PM

Everyone knows that Al Gore didn't really win an Oscar, right?

Posted by snark at March 21, 2007 06:45 PM

....couldn't he win a Pulitzer, as well?

The Triple Crown

I totally agree with you. I guess I'm just not as offended by people who don't as you are.

Everyone knows that Al Gore didn't really win an Oscar, right?

Uh, shyeah. God!

Posted by iamcoyote at March 21, 2007 07:10 PM

well, just an old lady here but i liked how slowly and clearly he spoke when he was the vice president / sure, sounds like he was trying to tell us something important which he was / where he lost me was having Joe Lieberman as running mate

Left Coaster states:

"If the GOP wants dinosaurs like Joe Barton, Denny Hastert, and Jim Inhofe to be their poster children on the issue of global warming, I think the Democrats will be only too happy to oblige. "

Hmmmm...some may say a "dinosaur" is preferrable to an embarrassment such as Barbara Boxer, a.k.a. The Queen of Save The Trees, Kill The Children.

Grow up Barbara. I've seen children on the beach act more responsibly with their beach balls than you do with a Senate Committee gavel.
