[Editor: ignore=off]Apprently no one fired actually fired the 8 US attorneys! Perhaps they're still on the job!
Lying to the press and Congress is a rite of initiation for "loyal Bushies" into the sacred mysteries of Bushco and "conservatism"---barefaced lying is truly meaningless to them, and probably advocated by "those in the know" as an acceptable means to a desired end.

So, with this latest Friday Docu-Dump, are they just egging congress to move to impeach? Is it another game of manipulation, a distraction from something else coming down the pike?
Ugh. Who know what to think anymore.
Posted by vicki at March 24, 2007 01:38 PMApparently, to the corporate press/media, Gonzalez did not lie. He merely "appeared to contradict" something else he said.
The American public needs plain English: Gonzalez lied.
We need some Democratic attack dogs (does that species still exist?) to get out there and say "Gonzalez lied" over and over and over and over.
Posted by James E. Powell at March 24, 2007 02:27 PMWill Gonzales attend the meeting to decide if the person in charge of scrubbing and shredding E-mails will have to be fired?
Apparently they missed a biggie.
Posted by TIKI AL at March 24, 2007 03:16 PM"2) accept that Bush is comfortable with lying and simply move for the impeachment of Alberto Gonzales?" Gee, I'd say that maybe the impeachment of Bush is what's called for here. If we are going to tie up the final year and a half of Bush's Regime, why not just impeach him, instead of a list of his underlings (Cheney included) which have simply carried out his orders. I think the time has come to conclude that George W. Bush is, in fact, the actual president, and that all the six years of scandals are, in fact, his doing. Just because he's an idiot doesn't mean he's not responsible.

Oh, so true! It is definitely important to clean out the slime before the next election.
Posted by Mary at March 24, 2007 04:55 PMScout, it's easy to see that you haven't read Mary's post just above this post. The reason for all the concern is not because some lawyers who could easily get jobs paying more for their services than the government is paying them lost their jobs. The reason is that they are corrupting our justice system, just as they have corrupted everything else. They are perverting the use of USAs so that they become weapons in elections. If you selectively prosecute election frauds according to party affiliation, that does not speak well for Democrats ability to ever win a critical election again. They'll let us win some, so that it doesn't appear out of balance, but, geeze, they've stolen two Presidential elections so far. Do you really want this to go on for perpetuity?
Posted by Ann in AZ at March 24, 2007 05:36 PMT2, it would be great if we could just move to impeach Bush. But just because someone is impeached does not remove him from office, as we saw with the Clinton case. The House makes the allegations (charges) against whoever is being impeached by passing Articles of Impeachment with a simple majority. However, the next step is a trial in the Senate presided over by the Chief Justice of the United States. But the Senate has to convict with a 2/3 majority. That means 66 or 67 Senators, and Democrats only have 51 Senate seats, 50 if you consider the one in the hospital, and 49 if you consider Lieberman. I seriously doubt that that many Republic Party Senators would convict. So the answer to many questions is We Do Not Have a Supermajority!
Oh, and BTW, James E. Powell at March 24, 2007 02:27 PM, I have 3 words (or names) for you. Waxman, Conyers, and Leahy. All three are currently doing a good job of calling "bullshit" on this administration.
Posted by Ann in AZ at March 24, 2007 06:06 PMAnn,
You are right that just passing articles of impeachment don't remove the miscreant from office. However. There is another step in the process before it comes to the trial in the Senate. There are hearings - investigations into the crimes alleged BEFORE the Senate begins hearings. That's where the power of Congressional oversight can be important!
Begin the hearings into impeachment. Subpoena everyone who may know what has transpired. Even if a biased Supreme Court twists the constitution again, the media cannot NOT cover the evidence. WE, the people, may finally hear the truth. Then, may justice be done.
Posted by DeminNewJ at March 24, 2007 07:59 PM I presume the firings were part of an plan to derail investigations that would have fully exposed the "culture of corruption",much talked about last year.
Since the Justice Department did have the right to fire these attorneys for any reason, they could have just told the truth and weathered the storm. But they apparently decided to try to avoid embarrassment by lying.
Since Gonzales lied to Congress ,isn't he potentially guilty of perjury?
