Comments: Politicizing the Justice System

Hmm, some of the U. S. attorneys weren't goose-stepping high enough to suit Bushie or Cheney or Speedy? Great to see than this gang o' thugs was workin' hard to make America safe for their very own special brand of neo-stalinism...

Mary, I believe it is Rayne at FDL that has developed a list of all the USAs that have been changed after Bushes initial changes were made. I don't believe she's put her work out for public consumption, but she has mentioned that she is putting things together on this. Both Christy and Looseheadprop are really appalled at the tactics being used, too, and possibly could put you in touch with Rayne. I really have the feeling, since two heads are better than one, that you two should get together. I read about your post over at FDL, and since liberal blogs don't tend to be competitive, but are rather symbiotic, maybe you could get in touch. You never know, something good could come of it.

This post is a keeper! You've taken all the threads and put them together in one easy to read and understand piece.

Thank you!

Great job!

It's a window into the real depth of the corruption of this Administration. Rove slides his slime between the cracks. It's like battery acid that slowly corrodes the whole system.

Argh!

And now you have the rest of the story.

As I mentioned before, 2008 will be the election to steal because the GOP does not want a Democratic controlled Congress and WH. From my understanding, all those new appointments have one thing in common, voter suppression.

What amazes me is the fact that these people think they are so clever, yet they weren't prepared to handle someone asking questions. Gonzales didn't learn his lessons very well. He is a dead man walking.

"Last April, while the Justice Department and the White House were planning the firings, Rove gave a speech in Washington to the Republican National Lawyers Association. He ticked off 11 states that he said could be pivotal in the 2008 elections. Bush has appointed new U.S. attorneys in nine of them since 2005: Florida, Colorado, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Arkansas, Michigan, Nevada and New Mexico. U.S. attorneys in the latter four were among those fired."

Ann in Az: Are you aware of the Five Star Video(Tempe) obscenity case that had to be dismissed when the defense showed that the same 4 raunchy DVDs were being sold by Arizona's largest retailer under the direction of Federal bankruptcy employees?

Yes, the Feds were supervising selling the same porn they were trying to get convictions on to influence the Prudish Godbots before the election.

Then there's that Rick Renzi investigation.
Poor Charlton.

Wonderful post, Mary, this is what they were in power to do - the Reps used war to distract from their getting cronies into every position of oversight they could, so they could continue their wars and theft of the treasury until the US economy collapses.

Ann in AZ, thanks for the tip. I will see if I can get in contact with FDL's Rayne.

David Kurtz at TPM says the DOJ/White House liason (who, in the comments at Muckraker says is a fundy graduate from Regents University, oddly enough) has taken a leave of absence on Monday. Hmmm.

The Justice Department under Bush's pet Attorney General has been riddled with partisan and ultra-conservative US Attorneys who have no respect for our constitution.

Look at their picks for the Supreme Court -- blatant unitary-executive wingnuts. And those were high-profile positions - you can bet that a lot of authoritarian scum got into the lower positions under the public radar.

These creeps corrupt everything they touch. Like African cannibal-kleptocrats, they have no philosophy of government other than self-dealing, power-grabbing and looting.

Great post!

It clearly establishes means, motive, opportunity. There is no question about the purpose of the purge. Nor is there question about its scope. It leaves no question that people at the highest level of DOJ intended to politicize the whole justice system.

It also raises questions about every investigation that has been started, been conducted, or been concluded during Gonzales tenure. And many that have not been.

I find it easy to complain about America and Americans, but for all our flaws and all the hellish punishments that may be appropriate to our crimes and social flaws, none of our behavior is so bad that it warrants a complete subversion of the justice system of the Abu G. sort. Except, perhaps, we should know better than to promote a known war criminal to the spot of attorney general.
