Of course McCain is having trouble raising money. So will the other repuglican frontronners soon as the American People get more and more fed up with the lying and the war. Only Hegal seems to have his ear to the ground on the war. By 2008, no candidate on ehter side will ever admit to having ever supported the war.
Posted by Nobody at March 26, 2007 09:32 AMAre the Iranians stupid enough ...
Personally, I don't think they're stupid at all. Rather, I think this is a well-calculated move. At the very least, they're issuing a great big FU and baiting bush's manhood by picking on his best little buddy.
Is it a coincidence that bush is embroilled in growing scandals, while his coalition of the willing deserts him? Are they taking a calculated risk in thinking bush lacks the popular and international support to launch an attack? Are they taking a calculated risk in thinking they can withstand the first wave of bombing and then take out a couple of US carriers in the Gulf? I don't know.
There's way too much geopolitical chess going on that we know nothing about. Consequently, it's dangerous to simply label them as stupid.
In a somewhat related aside, I'm reminded of the comparison of American and Russian mobsters (maybe it was from The Sopranos, I forget). The difference between the two is that in their off time, American mobsters sit around watching daytime television or reading comic books and Russian mobsters play chess.

I've hated their newspaper here in Chicago since my college days, in the 60's, and they haven't budged or changed once in their right wing conservatism in all those years.
What can you say about a newspaper that never endorsed a Democrat for president in its over 100 years of existence?
Oh, and by the way, belated happy birthday, too.
Posted by brians3 at March 26, 2007 10:25 AMafter the 2008 elections the grand old party will remain dormant for a very very long time...and rightfully so

Damn straight. I know it's well-understood the Brits want out and have tried withdrawing as far as they can, but this was a shot at the Brits too. "Don't be dumb and follow the Americans into the deeper level of hell that we'll make for them."
Happy belated birthday Steve! 50 ain's bad, us Aries just keep right on a tickin'.
Am anxous to see just how much water Webb will allow Hagel to pour into their Iraq amendment. Trouble with getting the job because you're tough is arriving every morning prepared to be tough.
Posted by mainsailset at March 26, 2007 12:24 PMHappy birthday, Steve. Only fifty? Just a kid. I've got the big Seven-Oh coming up real soon. It's merely a number IF we disobey what teacher said and don't act our ages, right? We all have our own diversions. What works for me is to fire up the Suzuki SV650 and leave everything behind. I'm sure you have something un-fiftyish to do. Whatever it is: Enjoy!!
Posted by Don Bacon at March 26, 2007 04:27 PMIsn't it interesting that when the US kidnaps Iranian diplomats it isn't news, but when the Iranians kidnap Brit sailors it is news and maybe a cause for war. Very similar to the Israeli/Palestine situations where the Israelis kidnapped hundreds of Palestinians without a murmur but when Hezbollah grabbed a couple of Israeli soldiers it was the purported trigger to war.
We're special, don't you know. The PNAC necons said so, and now their tattered banner is being picked up by "New Progressives" --the DLC, the Truman Project and other nominal Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Howard Dean who are all lathered up by Iran's intransigence in not doing US bidding, which means that Iran must be taken to the woodshed. They call it Exemplarism. The US is "The City on the Hill" and has the right, by diplomatic and economic means if possible, but by military means if necessary, to impose its will on other peoples, who just don't know any better 'cause they aren't us.
Posted by Don Bacon at March 26, 2007 04:42 PMAnd what about the Mark Foley sex scandal that erupted before the elections last year?
Karl Rove reportedly intervened early last year and talked Mark Foley into running for re-election.
The Republican House leadership had apparently known about Mark Foley's activities for quite some time, but kept it tightly under wraps, with their plan being that Mark Foley would win re-election and the Republicans would retain control of Congress.
Did I mention that Karl Rove reportedly intervened early last year and talked Mark Foley into running for re-election?
If Karl Rove knew what the House Republican leadership knew, did other top Bush administration consiglieres also know, like top officials at the DOJ? Alberto Gonzales? The DOJ's White House liaison, Monica Goodling? And they left the young, male House pages to fend for themselves against a Republican sexual predator?
I am "shocked" and "awed" at the blatant partisanship and greed of today's "culture of corruption" Republican Party. Loyal Americans? Hardly. Christian? Hardly. Protectors of the children? Hardly. Naked greed, naked ambition and naked partisanship totally supplant these values among members of today's "culture of corruption" Republican Party. Pathetic.
Posted by The Oracle at March 26, 2007 11:39 PMi just find it funny that when it comes to this issue of the british soldiers..nobody fails to mention the words 'UN-sanctioned',whereas the very presence of the US and UK soldiers in iraq and those waters was NOT UN-sanctioned. Nor does anyone remember to mention the kidnapping and taking of the iranian diplomats in iraq.
you know, one can wish for equal coverage and journalism, but i suppose that is as much a dream as peace in teh middle east.
sz
arent the 50's the youth of old age ? when i look back from 73 i think i was a real whippersnapper at 50 / happy birthday, Steve, and many more
