Good morning, Scout. Thanks for correcting me on the Vietnam famine post. You're quite right that the Japanese completed what the French had started. And you caught the incongruity that bothered me when I read it, too, about keeping a receipt for a gun with the serial number filed off. But then, the shooter had to have been severely disturbed, certainly enough for logic to be problematic.

Posted by dalloway at April 17, 2007 08:24 AM

Filing the serial numbers off but hanging onto the purchase receipt?

The guy musta been wrong in the head, eh?

Posted by snark at April 17, 2007 08:31 AM

Too pat, stinks like a setup - like finding identification in aircraft luggage in the rubble of the WTC.

Posted by Thomas Ware at April 17, 2007 08:34 AM

Snark, the guy shot 60 people for no reason. And you need more evidence that he is wrong in the head?

What bothers me more is how he could have got the gun legally. VA has one of the laxest laws in the country, but how does a guy with a student visa buy two guns? Did he have a VA license?

I suspect that the state will take it out on the dealer and bust him for some sort of violation. Parents will sue VaTech and might get some settlement. But the issue is not likely to be resolved long term--not in this state.

Posted by buck at April 17, 2007 08:37 AM

maybe I can't think straight this morning

What do you mean, this morning?

Anyway, for comparison's sake this morning for the rest of the readers, the The Gang Lu massacre in 1991. The film Dark Matter is loosely based on the Gang Lu story. It won the Sloan prize at Sundance in January of this year.

Posted by idiosynchronic at April 17, 2007 08:39 AM

A setup?

Dear God!

You think maybe 'they' thought he was NORTH Korean when they set him up?

Posted by snark at April 17, 2007 08:39 AM

And thank you for playing "I'm A Conspiracy Freak", Thomas. Your parting gifts are waiting for you backstage.

Sadly, the wingnuts will be all over this for weeks to come since it gives them red meat to avoid talking about the myriad Republican failures and scandals they've been avoiding like the plague.

One thing that I notice has been brushed aside so far is that it appears to have been a "domestic dispute." When we get more details, I wonder if there will be a discussion about men who feel the need to shoot up a bunch of people because their girlfriends break up with them.

dalloway, just so you know, scout is a troll. He pretends to be a Dem and he won't go away - even though he's been banned many times. We've been trying to ignore him, because responding makes him post more and more outrageous stuff.

Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2007 08:54 AM

Not an expert on guns but I know Virginia has one of the laxest gun laws in the Nation.

Makes you wonder why a foriegn student was able to purchase a gun that was so lethal from a Virginia dealer. Also makes you wonder if let's say a terrorist sleeper cell could purchase assault weapons in Virginia and never worry about trying smuggle them in?

Because of Virginia's gun laws, there is a pipeline for weapons traveling from Virginia into Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and elsewhere in the Northeast corridor. These weapons become used in the majority of gun violence throughout the inner cities.

All these NRA'ers can harp on the 2nd ammendment, but if they want their right to bear arms, gun manufacturers, retailers, and owners have to accept responsibility of preventing guns from falling into the wrong hands, particularly at the point of sale.

Posted by Jason at April 17, 2007 08:56 AM

my comment about this thread so far....

uuuuuhhh,uuuuuummmmm....whoah...what the???(rolling eyes and whistling doesn't quite capture what I'm really thinking about several comments here snark, but you are close). Sadly there are some here who really are dumbfounded about the logic/saneness of a random mass suicide-murderer who used a gun with a filed off serial number but had a gun receipt. This profound dilemma (for some) ranks right up there with those seeking an answer to the... Do you walk to school or bring a lunch?

EVERYDAY. 24/7, 365 Iraqis live with what we're experiencing now. And this in a nation with one tenth our population.

Besides as I am sure you don't need to point out, the Second Amendment doesn't mention Asians so there is no reason to believe they should be allowed to bare arms. Going by original intent, Blacks should only be allowed to carry 3/5 of an arm

Posted by msobel at April 17, 2007 10:26 AM

emal, I hadn't seen that part yet, but I think it was on the radio that I heard that the only kind of pattern these mass killings have is that there were people who had some kind of warning that the perps were disturbed. I just wonder how can we figure out which ones will go on a spree like this and which just need "counseling."

Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2007 10:44 AM

That councilor needs to be investigated. Pronto!

Sounds dirty to me.

Posted by snark at April 17, 2007 10:47 AM

Parts of his note are being reported:

A note believed to have been written by Cho was found in his dorm room that railed against "rich kids," "debauchery" and "deceitful charlatans" on campus.

Sound familiar? He was also stalking women and had been in trouble with the law. Geez.

Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2007 10:59 AM

There are reports that this guy had been accused of stalking. Stalkers can buy guns? How convenient.

It's also been reported that he set a fire in the dorm, yet he was still living in the dorm. If you set fire to the dorm deliberately, I think you should be barred from living in the dorms. But that's just me.

What I don't get is that he shot two people at AJ (the dorm), then went back to his dorm (a different one) and no one saw him? Dorm hallways are busy places at 7am--kids going back and forth to the bathroom, to shower, to the dining hall, etc. The RA went running to the scene (and was killed), but no one else saw the guy--the police first thought that maybe it was a murder-suicide? Someone had to have let him in the dorm in the first place--apparently there are passcards to get in if you live there. I don't understand how they didn't have a handle on who this guy was after the first shooting and I'm curious to know why they thought he had left campus.

Posted by CG at April 17, 2007 10:59 AM

As for possible conspiracy theories attached to the shootings, several VT students have said they saw the gunman armed and firing. What I wonder about is why he headed to one particular building, Norris Hall. As I understand it, this is predominantly an engineering building, although apparently used for all sorts of classes. I wonder if he went looking for a specific student, class, or faculty member.

Get help, you goddam ghoul. And get lost.

Posted by iamcoyote at April 17, 2007 01:27 PM

Have any of you been college students? Been around college students? There is a remarkable tendency toward, shall we say, messiness? Is it that hard to believe the shooter wouldn't, on the day of the deed, toss all his stuff into his regular ratty backpack, the one which has all kinds of crap stuck into its various extra pockets, including, wadded up at the bottom of one of the side pockets beneath the chewing gum wrappers where he sticks his water bottle, a few receipts, including one from the gun dealer?

Yeah, I guess I'm a witless dupe of the conspiracy. Sue me. I'm gonna go off now and stop pointless speculation about a situation where even the people on the scene don't know all the details yet.

It happened right as students were trying to change classes, but they had doors locked on them so they couldn't get in, yet they were being told to take cover for their safety. Insanity. I let them talk about the occurrences in Va., their concerns, and then turned them towards possible solutions. Then I let them go really early. That's the part they appreciate the most. Good kids. Really good kids.

way, actually, scout lost, because the goal was to finally get him banned. He's been spreading poison in these threads for weeks now, and he dances just inside the envelope until he's nudged over the edge. If we have to make one post ugly to expose him for the troll that he is, then so be it. Sadly, it's always on the emotional threads that he shows his true colors; that's part of his calculation.

p-dip, I heard about the umbrella incident. Apparently, the first report said it was a yoga mat. Crazy day.

Both guns would be on the same receipt, like a grocery receipt, if you will.

They've already reported that he bought the guns at different times. Read the story, scout.

Poor Hokies. They had to put up with 2 mass murderers in 2 days.

The chimp makes Cho pale by comparison.
