I guess I am a broken record on this, but why is there not more fuss from Dems and lefto-sphere on horrible Bush/Cheney diplomatic and political efforts re Iraq? Those are just as horribly done (or not done) by Bush/Cheney as the military side.
The troops will come home soon. It will either be in an orderly way very soon, as recommended by everyone from Iraq Study group on center and left-ward. Or a less orderly way by the next Democratic administration, if we luck out for the next 20 months. Or it will be a mess a little later, if Bush/Cheney gets their way, or if we get a Republican Bush-clone in 2009.
But regardless of what happens, without comprehenseive negotiations with Iraq neighbors and parties inside Iraq, the aftermath will be a very risky mess. Bush/Cheney are not doing much to help out there. There should be as much noise made about the administartion's stupid policy regarding ergional negotiations (including Iran) as when and how the troops come home. Why isn't Bush being hammered on that? I think it is just as important as troop issue, and will help counter the charges that the Democrats policy is mere defeatism. Reid and Pelosi have made a few statements, but I don't think often or loudly enough.
Posted by anon at May 6, 2007 05:04 PMIts Bush's War. He planned it ("he tried to kill my Daddy"), Cheney carried it out (Mushroom cloud), Tenet and Powell and Rice enabled it, Rummy "directed" it. Most of the Dems fell for it. Most of the world realized it was a farce. Now everyone does. But our Dems now lack, in election year, the nerve to stop it??? Stop it. Send the bill back to Mr. 28% and let him suck on it. Again and again and again, until January 2009 if it comes to it. Don't give the madman another dollar.
Posted by at May 6, 2007 05:26 PMHe could be Mr. 1% and it wouldn't matter. You think he or Cheney or the corporate death machine gives a fuck?
They were both installed in a coup d'etat. They and their enablers do not believe in governments deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. Quite the opposite.
We have been living under an unelected dictatorship since December 2000. Goddammit, I'm getting tired of this bullshit facade that we still have a democracy. We don't. Dick Cheney and Karl Rove and Drunky shoot us in the face every day, then take a crap on us. We're about to start putting up with $4.00 gas. It was $1.50 when these sadistic psycho mass murdering fascist fucks stole our country. It will not end until every American is in the street. As Mario Savio said, throwing our bodies on the gears. I'm afraid it's going to have to get very, very bad before that happens. But I expect it.
We act like this is all still politics and Bushco is civilized. It's fucking not, and they aren't. They care about this country, and about you and me, as much as they care about a dead Iraqi five-year-old. They are fucking evil incarnate, they own the most astonishing propaganda machine ever seen on the planet, and they will continue plundering and destroying everything good and decent on this earth until they are physically stopped, or until there's nothing left to plunder.
It is that bad. Until Nancy and Harry raise an army and send it to that little pussy commander guy's doorstep – interrupting his three-way with Rove and Jeff Gannon – nothing will change.
Btw, why are all fascist men closet homosexuals? I love gay men, I'm a lesbian myself. But we have a very sick, closet homo problem in this country.
Posted by Sharkbabe at May 6, 2007 06:46 PMYou know, what this country needs is a lot more concern trolls. What we've learned from the Democrats for a few decades now is that when they smell the smallest whiff of defeat in the air, politicians always do what concern trolls tell them to do.
Dems have finally begun to learn to resist the siren songs from under the bridge. Right wingers, on the other hand, have never had to deal with concern trolls, and have had no chance to develop resistance.
So send a few over there to let them know, in the friendliest way, that voting to end the war is all that can keep them ensconced in their seats. In point of fact, they're already wrapped around Bush's Folly more tightly than vapid around Paris Hilton, and nothing will save most of them now.
But we don't have to tell them that. Convince them we have their best interests at heart, and maybe they'll act, for the first time and against all their former principles, for the best interests of the country.

Posted by Toby Petzold at May 6, 2007 08:13 PM"Sorry Newt, Harry and Nancy should be hanging Iraq around every Republican’s neck every day until they crumble. Democrats need to point out every day that Al Qaeda supports Bush’s strategy, and that Bush is Al Qaeda’s best friend."
Should be. But probably won't.
Let's see, what can they do.
Cut off funding?
Revoke the 2001 AUMF?
Have Pelosi put impeachment back on the table?
Impeach Cheney?
End this war under the War Powers Act?
Stay the course. Yeah. That's safe.

I do not accept funding from any political party in any way, shape or form, so that I may maintain an independent and objective opinion.
Sharkette: Nice rant. There are alot of non-Godbots in the closets who are afraid to come out in the "sunshine" of the Bushco Theocracy, also.
If you can lose your job for not being a big enough "bushie", what chance would a chocolate gorging hedonistic heathen have?
Posted by TIKI AL at May 6, 2007 08:23 PMRight on, Steve!! You're back in the groove, buddy, and there's none better when you get the scent. They're on the ropes. We can end this thing. Believe! BELIEVE!!
Posted by Don Bacon at May 6, 2007 08:36 PMBtw, why are all fascist men closet homosexuals?
They want to be controlled by an authoritarian male. That's really all there is to it. Examine the posts of every republi-con who posts here. Every one of them is screaming for a father figure to do them.
Great post S-babe.

to consider that brings joy to my heart. bring it on!!!
Posted by michael72 at May 6, 2007 09:28 PMThe Congressional Democrats need to keep welding the Congressional Publicans to Dubya and his failed Iraq policy. To do this, they will need to keep scheduling votes on any emergency supplemental through the summer. As an emergency supplemental, the funding should be doled out on as limited a basis as possible - even as short as 30 days. Force the Congressional Publicans to keep voting for Dubya's failed war and rack up the vote tally for use in 2008. Rub the Publicans' noses in their failed policy and challenge them to keep supporting it.
Finally, put them in the nutcracker with any long-term funding to be included in the FY2008 Defense budget. Tie that budget to solid benchmarks and force them to choose voting against the Defense budget of the United States. Let them explain how they voted against it even though they wanted to vote for it. The 2008 campaign will be most enjoyable to watch the Publican liars being roasted with their own words. The time has come to teach the Publicans the meaning of karma.
Posted by PrahaPartizan at May 6, 2007 09:49 PMPrahaPartizan May 6, 2007 09:49 PM: If the Democrats don't have the votes to overturn the vetos, that sounds like a nice plan. Finally getting rid of the emergency supplemental lie would be nice too. Bush/Cheney and their GOP deadenders are admitting they want troops there for a looooong time, in an occupation, so now they have to plan for it and include it in the budget -or admit that they are too incompetent to plan a military occupation, can't figure out what the hell it's suppsoed to accomplish, don't know what they hell they are doing.
And... Publican is a great name for the Bush/Cheney GOP (it's crookeder than your Daddy's GOP). If they insist on using the 'Democrat Party', then call them Publicans.
Here are some meanings from the OED:
1. Rom. Hist. One who farmed the public taxes; hence, a tax-gatherer. (Chiefly in Scriptural quotations or allusions.)
b. transf. Any collector of toll, tribute, customs, or the like. Also fig.
2. transf. One who is regarded as ‘a heathen man and a publican’ (Matt. xviii. 17); one cut off from the church; an excommunicated person.
So, let's put it together: a bunch of crooked tax farmers funneling their fixed and unfair taxes aimed mainly at the poor, to their very wealthy corporate sponsors. They collect steep monetary tolls from anyone desiring their attention while serving in public office. They cynically delude and use religious conservative voters for the vile purpose of accumulating earthly political power in the name of religion, without regard to consequences for true foundations for religion, or founders intentions for place or religioin in US society. They are true Publicans!
"Can we dispense with the word "terror" and all its derivatives? "

".... preventing the Democrats from fighting a real war on terror." (steve, is it wise to continue to respect this logic? )

I can help you with your problem. Find your own papa and do as you're told. Bush and Cheney are taken, but you can keep on dreaming of houses with awnings. It's okay.
Posted by phidipides at May 7, 2007 06:00 AMsqueamish is a term to describe someone finding that they are surrounded by unknown, but harmless intruders.
that is pretty descriptive of people that want killing to go on, and only the "good new" about such killing reported on.
It does appear that about half of the people of our country are insane. to both halves.
