Steve, Hillary's strategy to appealing to the rightward thinkers seems to be working, as the local wingnut morning talk host said that if he had to choose a Dem it would be Hillary. Of course, he made sure to preface his choice with the fact that he would have to have a gun pointed at his head and forced to choose a Dem.
Posted by Howd at June 6, 2007 11:25 AMI agree. If Hillary gets the nomination her first call offering the VP slot to someone will be to Obama.
Whether he accepts or not is debatable.
Although I don't see much of a downside for him if he does accept. Even if they lose.
Posted by snark at June 6, 2007 11:33 AMthey are as popular as bugs at a party. when Al comes in, one may be lucky enough to be his running mate, but he would do better with Wes Clark.
it is always nice to see that the business as usual crowd is doing, well, business as usual.
Senator Clinton is may paint herself into a corner with rhetoric stating 'the real differences on Iraq are not among Democrats but rather between Democrats and Republicans'. There is new bipartisan legislation that was just introduced by Senator Salazar with a group of uber-centrist Dems like Pryor and Lincoln along with Republicans like Judd Gregg and Lamar Alexander to make US policy in Iraq that of the Iraq Study Group. The text isn't available yet but if Clinton is running a general election strategy calling for bipartisanship will she support the ISG approach?
My guess is the details will look awful in that bill, be non-binding, and play semantic games that will change the US presense in Iraq from 150,000 soldiers to 50,000 soldiers and 100,000 'advisors' overnight.
Clinton will have a hard time running a general election strategy in the primaries if the Salazar/Alexander ISG legislation gets heavy play.
Posted by joejoejoe at June 6, 2007 01:11 PMI don't think Clinton would choose Obama as a running mate--a woman AND an African-American might be too much for some people.
Posted by CG at June 6, 2007 01:22 PMagree with CG
I could see Richardson though
Posted by John B. at June 6, 2007 01:30 PMalthough I should add that a question would remain (at least IMO) about whether a Latino male could let himself be the second banana to a female president
I would like to think Bill R. would say yes, an maybe he would, but it is still a question for me especially after living in Santa Fe for a number of years...
Posted by John B. at June 6, 2007 01:32 PMI seem to recall Richardson and Bill Clinton were buddies and I too think he would accept a tap for VP. However, I am still not a fan of Hillary. I think Edwards and Obama are going to see their stock rise. We are a long way out.
Posted by gtash at June 6, 2007 02:42 PMHillary should just run as a GOP -- Hillary Thatcher. She'll be the cautious GWB as Bill was.
The American experiment in democracy may be over -Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton is not a democracy, and I wish my fellow Democrats would stop saying that it is.
Posted by Marie at June 6, 2007 02:53 PMCG, ya think? A woman president is a bridge too far for most people. Like it or not. And as long as the GOP Cable Media keeps spelling Obama's name Osama, he'll be too much also. We can play nice as long as we want, but when was the last time a woman or African-American was president or vice pres. Gore's won once already. He's not even in officially again and is polling within 10 points of the leader and beating all the Bush-loving GOPer robots. Gore/Obama, Gore/Richardson, Gore/Clark or even Gore/Edwards looks like a shoo-in. The Hillary? She needs to dump Carville before I even want to mention her again.
Posted by T2 at June 6, 2007 03:37 PMSAY "NO" TO TWO DECADES OF TWO FAMILY RULE!!!!!!!!
Posted by Judith at June 6, 2007 03:37 PMIf Hillary wins two terms, that's TWENTY EIGHT YEARS of two family rule. NO!
Posted by Judith at June 6, 2007 03:40 PMleft r right , every yank is a doodle.
Posted by Hemaworstje at June 6, 2007 04:17 PMAnd then Judith, it's George Prescott Bush's time to run. Well maybe Jeb wins it first and is followed by George P. He needs a little more age and Jeb should get it.
Such a devotion to public service, great families!
Posted by peter at June 6, 2007 04:47 PMHey Peter, tell me, what has George done for you in the past seven years?
Posted by Judith at June 6, 2007 05:11 PMWhile Hillary leads by an average of 10 points nationally, her real strength is apparent when one looks at her leads in individual states. Each candidate leads in their home states. Edwards leads by an average of 3 points in Iowa. CLINTON LEADS IN EVERY OTHER STATE.
Posted by JoeCHI at June 6, 2007 05:49 PMThe very fact that peter thinks that another Bush will prove electable shows how realistic his expectations are.
Posted by herbal tee at June 6, 2007 06:29 PMI feel safer than I did before. Roberts, Alito, hundreds of conservative federal judges with lifetime terms. Many others, but, I'm more remembering JF Kennedy. I do not ask what my country can do for me. What George did/does for me. I'm not looking for anything from my country. I want it to be the country that brought my parent's parents here. I'm grateful to be living here and I'm grateful for the freedoms we enjoy. If some civil liberties are temporarily infringed on as a result of an attack, I'm okay with it. As long as it's temporary.
I'm grateful that the air we breath is the same on the first November Wednesday every two years as it was the previous Tuesday as we cast our votes. No matter who wins, the sun comes out, the day begins anew. Life goes on...and there are so many worse places we could be awakening in. I'm grateful that there are places like this that will allow me to comment even when they don't agree with many of the things I say.
Well, you asked, I answered.
Posted by peter at June 6, 2007 06:31 PMAfter the Dems roll to full power after the next election we can all be gratefull that peter will crawling under that neo-con rock with turdblossom for at least 2 years.
Posted by Seven of Six at June 6, 2007 06:50 PMThe Dems that just caved to a 29% president are going to roll over anything more than an eggroll surely indicates out of balance expectations.
Posted by peter at June 6, 2007 06:57 PM"caved to a 29% president" .......29% president. Just think about that a minute peter.
Posted by T2 at June 6, 2007 07:39 PMPeter continues to be a dick, but that is to be expected. Peter Dick ought to be praying his Pharisee ass off that the Democratic Party nominates Queen Hillary.
The Iowans may dash that hope, however, and Queen Inevitable can lower expectations all she wants...The Inevitable do not lose the first contest.
Iowans, the fate of the world depends on you. Pull a Kurt Warner or Zach Johnson and come through like fucking champions.
Posted by God Of War at June 6, 2007 07:52 PMHillary is out with my Teamster Union family:
A few weeks ago The Nation disclosed that Hillary Clinton's chief strategist and pollster, Mark Penn, leads a giant PR firm, Burson-Marsteller, that aggressively helps corporations stop union organizing drives.
Dear Senator Clinton:
It is with distress that we write you today. The Nation recently posted a story about Mark Penn, your pollster and chief strategist, detailing some of his firm's direct support for anti-union/anti-worker campaigns. His firm's activities in the effort to undermine workers right to organize at Cintas, a campaign our unions are involved in, is particularly disheartening.
We wanted to bring this to your attention since we value your positions on EFCA [Employee Free Choice Act] and many other workers issues and do not want to see you or the Democratic Party embarrassed.
We look forward to hearing back from you on this matter.
Sincerely,
James P. Hoffa Teamsters General President
Bruce S. Raynor UNITE HERE General President
Sorry Hillary.
Didn't Hoffa support W once upon a time?
Mr. Union Member, ever hear of the Treaty of Detroit from 1950?
Caved to a weakened president T2. How strong does that make you people or your leaders?
Posted by peter at June 6, 2007 08:43 PMOne reason I think for hillary disappearing on certain subjects is that she is in the habit of pilfering from her rivals. She seems to lift their plans and ideas and copies them then, takes credit for being hers.
Alas, the msm has not caught onto this about Hillary or any of her other embarassments. Or, maybe they have and are just pretending it's not there as she is so establishment and their favorite.
Didn't Hoffa support W once upon a time?
I think he has supported every Democratic candidate. His big problem was trying to work with the powerful (do-nothing, except rip the people off) republi-con congress after he was elected Teamster president.
Give him credit, he learned quickly.
Mr. Union Member, ever hear of the Treaty of Detroit from 1950?
And it's relevancy to the discussion at hand? (BTW, the wife is in the Union, I'm a proud family member.)
Seems like you get shot down, then you just start changing the subject peter. At least you started to post your name.
Posted by Seven of Six at June 7, 2007 07:21 AMAt least you started to post your name.
say what? My name has been on everything posted here.
Posted by peter at June 7, 2007 09:07 AMThat wasn't you on the Kansas posts? Sorry then.
