Posted by phidipides at June 23, 2007 02:38 PMWhile Congress is completely ineffectual and neutered, I can see Dick and George (sounds like a comedy routine) declaring that they don't have to have another election, and announce that they are now the new King and Joker who will rule the Land.
Posted by Judith at June 23, 2007 02:52 PMI really like Rahm Emanuel's answer to this blatant law-breaking. And I wonder when Bush gives himself carte blanch to ignore these rules, does he also include his good pal, Karl - another operative who has top secret access?
Posted by Mary at June 23, 2007 03:07 PMI loved it coming on the late Friday News dump.
Par for the course.
well, this was all forecasted when Cheney told us a few months ago that they intended to do whatever they wanted, and the people of the USA, and the Congress of the USA and Republican Party itself were not going to factor into their decision making. We've got a criminal Administration, which has no fear of any kind of controls, just doing bad things. It is, really, just a Mafioso organization. Make money for their buddies and screw everyone else.
Just keep saying it. Yours is the right path and now's the time. Make him veto to protect himself over and over.
Posted by Mickey at June 23, 2007 04:19 PMI happen to have the footage of Bush and Cheney preparing to address Congress about these secrecy issues.
Posted by phidipides at June 23, 2007 04:21 PMphidip, Cheney already addressed Congress on this...his statement (which was apparently perfectly acceptable to the Religious Right) was"Go Fu*k yourself". He and George have gone on to "Fu*k us All". My question is, does this nation have the guts to reply "no, actually, Fu*k You" and put these criminals in prison.
Posted by T2 at June 23, 2007 04:33 PMSilly is one word for it, yes.
It is also to be remembered these men oversee a multi-trillion dollar budget, at least 5,000 nuclear weapons, and two armored divisions parked in Iraq.
Emanuel did all right, yes, but I'd feel better if any Democrat just came right out and said it: Cheney and Bush are stark raving lunatics who have flipped off the deep end.
It's true. How is this anything but psychosis? It's as if they're five years old and look us straight in the face and expect us to believe the earth is flat. Am I the only one who feels the need the pinch himself to make sure this is really true? That these lunatics are leading the United States of America?
Jesus. I mean, what the hell is there to say?

This isn't what you want to hear. You want words of assurance that the Democrats will somehow come together to protect our former Constitution from the republi-cons. You want to know that the America you used to know will somehow survive. You want to believe that the things set wrong will be set right. But as your previous post points out, the Democrats are complicit in maintaining the status quo through their actions and, of course, lack of action.
You are living in an America with the highest per capita incarceration rates in the world. An America where there are over 2500 kids under the age of 18 sentenced to life without parole. An America that has executed the death penalty on more children who committed crimes than any other nation other than Iran.
You are living in the wealthiest nation on the planet with the least accessible and most expensive healthcare, with healthcare quality worse than 33 other nations, below even Morocco.
You are living in a nation where education is gentrified. For the select few. A nation with 100% growth per year in homeless families. A nation that has torture codified in its laws. A nation that legally spies on its citizens. A nation where elections are electronically manipulated and voters regularly disenfranchised.
There are many other wrongs, too many to list. I cannot provide you with words of hope regarding this nation because it seems well beyond salvation at times. Selfishness is King. Hatred of your fellows is Queen. Graft and corruption are the twin mongrel princes. And the mighty jester of shopping at the mall is there to soothe your ills and the purgative offered tovall.
It is possible this is cyclic and the nation snaps back. I think this highly unlikely because both the Democrats and Republicans are unwillingly to stop sucking at the teat of the lobbyists. Look at Hillary, for example. Fucking more lobbyists than a Roman Empress doing the Legion. There can be no change with her.
So this is what I will tell you. America is an ideal that has likely seen its better days and it may never come back. Yet you can find many countries around the world where you and your talents will be welcomed. As a species, we are more global than at any time in our existence. You can find what you are looking for and be content. Unless you are in love with the scenery, pounding your head over the failure of the political system here gains you nothing but a headache. There is a way out.
Maybe through revisiting the concept that there are other options your journey will be eased here. Regardless, you are doing just fine. At least that beautiful brain of yours has the ability to comprehend, analyze, synthesize and evaluate what you see in your environment. You're doing better than 99% of the republi-cons.
7 more dead in Iraq today. 25 this week. The surge is working.
Posted by phidipides at June 23, 2007 06:53 PMPhid it is a mistake to think that these greed deranged vampires have that much clout in global macroeconomic trends.
The cycle will return to fear not because of any political exertion but because greed has once again fucked the dog and is eating itself.
Nutcase runts like Cheneybush can no more hold back the wave than King Canute.
The fundamentals are just unusually dismal, the levees are weak and the flood surge grows. A wipeout will happen between now and september causing trillions of paper dollars to vaporize.
I would just urge all of you to start preparing for depression and look really hard at how your lifestyle factors like consumer debt and risk exposure will be impacted.
Posted by Chris Rich at June 23, 2007 07:20 PMExcellent posts, phid and chris, thanks. I've given up economic flood predictions as the thing can apparently maintain itself in thin air.
As we write the epitaph for the ideal of America and look to places to flee (all very sensible), one must remember that because of Bushco and the Repubs refusal to address the looming climate catastrophe, the entire planet is on the brink of irreversible disaster---there's nowhere to run from that. One might as well run from one's self.
The Dems are worthless, and they're all we have or are going to have for the near future. We give up on them now, 18 months from crucial election that will decide the life of the planet and every species except the rat and the cockroach is fucked. Forever, for all intents and purposes.
There aren't that many sensible people in the crucial position of American voter. The planet needs every one of them.

Posted by Bill at June 24, 2007 07:36 AMwouldn't it be interesting if there is a constitutional provision for such and that our congress would actually send in the capitol police to arrest those surreptitiously acting as though part of the government?
it was special when the former DAG came back to congress and lied again about his involvement, and the involvement of others.
Tell me again daddy why we follow laws when everyone in our government is a felon?
Posted by oldtree at June 24, 2007 09:03 AM"it is important to remember that the war in Iraq is nothing more than a classic, brutal occupation meant simply to bring the populace into control so that we can start pumping their oil."
-(soccerdad)
Yes. And a successful one. Until the point they are driven out and the permanent bases destroyed.
As such, it is what has America has always done and will continue to do. This is why idiocies such as: "I'm against the war, but support the troops." leaves such a bad taste in one's mouth.
"It describes the destruction of their heritage, the use of illegal weapons, the use of illegal tactics such as torture and collective punishment..." -(soccerdad)
-Yes. And why does this sound so familiar? America does not like any indigenous peoples and wants to kill them. And remember to 'support the troops,' at at he same time that you oppose the war.

You forgot the Reid handwringing where he swoons because they just didn't have the votes. That's always good theatre.
