Comments: Strange Summer Daze USA

Fish are the least repulsive things to grace the pages of the Times.

It is fascinating. It's almost as if the NYT figured they could lure discriminating readers by providing them with daily intrigue. How will they cover today's news? Will it be an outstanding piece of reporting, as they still sometimes have, or will it be another lob from Michael Gordon or Leslie Wayne? Will the story I care about be in the Dr. Jekyll or the Mr. Hyde version of the Times?

Who knows? Check in tomorrow!

War is their thing.

Another Judy Miller for Iran.

One is reminded, i believe, of that glorious relationship they had with wonder boy Elliot Abrams on the El Mozoté massacre in El Salvador.

These little things are not 'accidents' with the the Times and it will not change any time soon.

War is their thing.

By any means possible.

I have never had a course in either screenwriting or journalism; but the first lesson taught in one influencial book on screenwriting advocates that conflict is what draws us into drama. Conflict keeps our attention. There are lots of ways of developing conflict, but guns and dead bodies always provide the most "bang for the buck." At least to American audiences. The business of selling papers cannot be oblivious to the same idea. At least not in America

Now that Rove/Bush has decided that it is politically expedient to start thowing hints of eventual force reductions in Iraq around as as stall tactic....lo and behold a General On The Ground says a pullback "could take place over 12 to 18 months if U.S. and Iraqi forces continued to make progress". A second grade student can read that and determine that he's talking 1 to 1.5 YEARS from now IF there is progress" in one specific region of Iraq. Nice try General On The Ground. You'll be sending a lot of "I regret to tell you" letters over the next 1.5 years, General On The Ground.
